Role
Digital Designer
On March 17, 2020, Quarantine Times started publishing the works of over 250 artists online after the city-mandated shut down brought life as we knew it to a halt. The 500+ page tome features over 151 contributions from Chicago-based artists, social workers, and thinkers responding to the crises of 2020.
Challenge
Quarantine Times aimed to transform an online anthology of over 250 artists’ works, spanning print, video, audio, and more, into a cohesive book that captured the sentiment of the 2020 pandemic. The primary challenge was translating diverse art mediums into print while preserving the artistic intent of each piece and maintaining a coherent narrative. The book needed to tell a holistic story of the shared experiences and creativity during this unprecedented time.
Approach
I helped establish a visual language for the anthology, defining typography, color, and basic design choices that could unify the content across mediums. Working under a tight timeline of one month, I designed a 400+ page book that balanced fidelity to the original works with readability and narrative flow. The design sought to mirror the digital experience while providing a physical format that guided the reader through the anthology.
